A pioneering work of modern musical theatre, The Soldier’s Tale was originally conceived for touring and outdoor performances. It is a chamber work composed by Igor Stravinsky in 1917, featuring narrators and dancers, and based on a Russian folk tale about the misfortune of a man who sells his violin to the Devil in exchange for a book that predicts the future.
At Stravinsky’s request, Swiss writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz wrote a moralizing libretto that can be read as a powerful statement against war.
